Coffee in the Pioneer Valley
Northampton coffee roasters include Indigo, established in 1989 and still roasting on a 1951 German roaster nicknamed Rosie. Along Route 9, Esselon roasts twice a week in Hadley on a 1969 Gothot, and up in Orange, Dean's Beans is owned by its workers. Four of the roasters we list are here. The Pioneer Valley's coffee story
Indigo Coffee Roasters on Riverside Drive in Northampton was established in 1989. It roasts on a 1951 German Gothot drum roaster nicknamed Rosie. In 2001, Dave Brinnel and Rachel Maddow of the Dave in the Morning show on Holyoke station WRNX wrote an Indigo Coffee jingle.
Rao's Coffee Roasting began micro-roasting in its flagship cafe in Amherst in 1990. Roast Local now lists Rao's under Hadley.
Dean Cycon, an environmental and indigenous rights lawyer, founded Dean's Beans in Orange in 1993 to sell organic, Fair Trade coffee. When he stepped away he sold the company to its workers, and it is now a worker-owned cooperative.
Fogbuster Coffee Works in Greenfield was founded in 1994 and air-roasts its coffee. In Springfield, Monsoon Roastery roasts small batches on a fluid bed roaster at 250 Albany Street, inside the Urban Food Brood.
Esselon has roasted organic and Fair Trade coffee in Hadley since 2006.
Esselon puts the case plainly: it says buying locally keeps money in the local economy, builds the tax base and cuts shipping distances.

Northampton and Florence
Indigo Coffee Roasters has no cafe; its coffee is sold online and through Pioneer Valley stores and cafes, and customers who call ahead pick up bulk orders of 5 pounds or more at the roastery. YUP Coffee Roasters is in Florence, a village of Northampton.
Hadley
Esselon Cafe and Coffee Roasting sits on Route 9 by the Hadley Common, between Amherst and Northampton, with a full food menu and garden seating in the warm months. The cafe says it runs on 100 percent solar power. Rao's Coffee Roasting Co. is also listed in Hadley.
Greenfield and Shelburne Falls
Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters started in the founders' home village of Shelburne Falls and now runs six cafes, from the Mohawk Trail in Shelburne to Greenfield, Hadley, Northampton, Easthampton and East Longmeadow. Its prepaid subscriptions are named for local landmarks, the Iron Bridge and the Bridge of Flowers. Fogbuster Coffee Works is in Greenfield.
Orange
Dean's Beans roasts at what it calls its beanery on R.W. Moore Avenue, where customers collect online orders. Pickup orders left unclaimed for 31 days go to food banks or local survival centers.
Springfield, Westfield and Williamsburg
Monsoon Roastery in Springfield, Circuit Coffee in Westfield and Elbow Room Coffee in Williamsburg. Chicopee has no roaster on the Roast Local list.

Which Pioneer Valley roasters use vintage roasters?
Indigo in Northampton roasts on Rosie, a 1951 Ideal Rapid Gothot built in Germany, and Esselon in Hadley roasts on a 1969 Gothot drum roaster that has been in steady use for more than 50 years.
Is Dean's Beans worker-owned?
Yes. Since 2023 Dean's Beans has been a 100 percent worker-owned cooperative, with 14 owners who make decisions together.
