Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Massachusetts: an independent roaster based in Greenfield, founded in 1990. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Founders Kathy Lytle and Curtis Rich started with a small espresso machine, a grinder and a tiny budget, drawing on 1960s Little Italy cafes, Paris street cafes and the Italian espresso tradition. They sold their first drink, an iced drink called the Iced Island Delight, on the Peaks Island ferry dock in Maine on July 4, 1990, then spent about a year taking their coffee setup by van and trailer to fairs and festivals along the East Coast. They then settled in their home village of Shelburne Falls and opened a very small alleyway cafe that hosted cribbage games and live music. About a year later a roaster arrived, along with 150 pound sacks of green coffee, and Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters took shape.
Their daughter Annabelle, who travelled with them as a child, is now the general manager. The company grew to cafes in Northampton, Easthampton, Greenfield, Hadley and East Longmeadow, and added house-baked pastries, fruit blender drinks and breakfast and lunch sandwiches along the way. It roasts in small batches daily and offers more than 40 coffees to wholesale buyers, including single origins, Organic Fair Trade certified coffees, blends and a line of flavored coffees.
What they roast
Roast levels run medium and dark. House blends include Breakfast Blend, First Light, Night and Day, Mocha Java, Rainbow Roast, French Roast, Viennese Roast and Espresso. Single origins on the list when we checked: Organic Guatemalan, Guatemalan Antigua, Costa Rican Tarrazu, Costa Rican La Minita, Colombian Supremo, Kenyan Single Estate, Organic Sumatran, Sumatran Mandheling and Organic Peruvian. A house Espresso blend, listed as a dark roast for espresso and milk drinks. A wide decaf range, including Decaf Colombian Supremo, Decaf French Roast and many decaf flavored coffees. The FAQ says decafs use traditional decaffeination methods. Offerings change with the seasons, so this is what their own pages listed on 2026-09-27.
