Greenfield

Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters runs six cafes in Western Massachusetts, and the Greenfield one is at 100 Federal Street. It roasts small batches daily and keeps a long flavored list, Sugar Maple Nut and Roasted Chestnut among them, next to blends such as First Light and Night and Day. The company does not publish the roastery's street address.

Fogbuster Coffee Works air roasts, a method it says only about 1 percent of the world uses. Its coffees are certified organic, fair trade and kosher, and the company says air roasting keeps them low in acid. It cans and kegs nitro cold brew, and its customers run from colleges and hospitals to ski resorts and inns.

Orange

Dean's Beans roasts in small batches at what it calls its beanery on R.W. Moore Avenue. It has no cafe, but online orders can be collected from a marked pickup area at the roastery. Anything left unclaimed for 31 days goes to food banks or local survival centers.

Greenfield's coffee story

Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters sold its first drink, an iced drink called the Iced Island Delight, on the Peaks Island ferry dock in Maine on July 4, 1990. Kathy Lytle and Curtis Rich then took their setup by van and trailer to fairs along the East Coast for about a year before settling in their home village of Shelburne Falls, in a tiny alleyway cafe. A roaster came about a year later. Their daughter Annabelle, who rode along as a child, is now general manager.

Dean Cycon was an environmental and indigenous rights lawyer when he started Dean's Beans in 1993. The company has worked with coffee-growing communities on more than 90 projects that the cooperatives lead, from clean water to schooling. When Dean stepped away, he sold the company to the people who work there, and since 2023 its 14 worker-owners make the decisions together.

Fogbuster began in 1994 as Pierce Brothers Coffee Roasters. Brothers Sean and Darren Pierce went to California to see Michael Sivetz, the engineer behind fluid bed air roasting, who shared his blueprints and gave them rights to one of his designs. Their first air roasted coffee went to the University of Massachusetts community, and the company later took the name of its best known super dark roast.

How we chose these roasters

Every roaster here roasts in Massachusetts and was operating when we read its own site, on the date its card shows (the list itself was last checked 2026-09-27). Facts come from each roaster's own pages, written in our words; we take nothing from reviews and show no ratings. No roaster pays to be listed, and a listing does not mean the roaster is part of the club. Run a roaster here and something is off? Email coffee@baystatecoffeeclub.com and we correct or remove the page.
