Dean's Beans Organic Coffee Company is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Massachusetts: an independent roaster based in Orange, founded in 1993. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Dean Cycon, an environmental and indigenous rights lawyer, started Dean's Beans in 1993 on the belief that a for-profit company could drive positive change for farming communities. From the start it has bought organic, Fair Trade coffee through long-term relationships with farming communities and roasted in small batches at its beanery in Orange. Over three decades it has partnered with coffee communities on more than 90 social, economic and environmental projects led by the cooperatives themselves, covering needs such as clean water, healthcare, education and income. It calls this People-Centered Development and stresses that it is partnership, not charity.
When Dean stepped away, he sold the company to its workers. Since 2023 it has been a 100 percent worker-owned cooperative, now with 14 owners who make decisions together. In its 2026 B Corp recertification it earned a B Impact score of 168.5, which it says makes it the highest scoring B Corp coffee company in the world. Recognition it lists includes Massachusetts Rural Small Business of the Year in 2026, Roast Magazine Macro Roaster of the Year finalist in 2020, 2022 and 2023, and Oslo Business for Peace honoree in 2013.
What they roast
Roast levels run light, medium and dark. House blends include Uprising! Breakfast Blend, Birdwatcher's Blend, Rattlesnake Gutter Brew, Roadhouse Blend, Ring of Fire, Moka Java, Full Moon, Arctic Sunrise, Ahab's Revenge and Aztec Two-Step. Single origins on the list when we checked: Ethiopian Sidama Boa Bedegelo (washed), Ethiopian Oromia, Guatemalan Los Jovenes, Mexican Chiapas, Colombian, Timor Atsabe, Moka Sumatra and Peruvian Carbon Neutral Coffee. Italian Espresso Roast, a dark blend of Central American coffees with some robusta. Green espresso blends are also sold for home roasters. NYSUT Blend Decaf, from the Pangoa cooperative in Peru and a Chiapas, Mexico cooperative, with part of sales going to New York State United Teachers. Decaf method not stated on the listing read. Owned by its 14 workers since 2023, so profits and decisions stay with the people who roast and ship the coffee in Orange. Pickup orders left unclaimed for 31 days are donated to food banks or local survival centers.
