Armeno Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Massachusetts: an independent roaster based in Northborough, founded in 1994. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
A working mill has stood beside Smith Pond in Northborough since 1727. It began as a saw and grist mill, and from 1908 the Armeno Cereal Company made wheat for bulgur, tabouli and couscous there for most of the century. The mill passed through three generations of the Kalenian family. In 1994 Paul Kalenian started Armeno Coffee Roasters in the building as a nod to the family's milling past. Six years later he sold the business to two longtime employees, Chuck Coffman and John Parks. Parks is the head roaster and buys the coffee, and Coffman helps customers through the catalog at the shop.
The old Armeno Cereal sign still hangs inside, former wheat bins now hold green coffee, and a Carter disk separator from the cereal days sits near the Diedrich drum roasters. Armeno roasts only mid-crop, 100 percent Arabica beans, roasts daily to fill orders, and has bought from many of the same growers for decades. Its Fair Trade certified coffees include Ethiopia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru and Sumatra.
What they roast
Roast levels run light, medium and dark. House blends include House Blend (full city), Mocha Java, Wachusett Blend, Double Bourbon Barrel Blend and Espresso Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Kenya AA Muriranja Estate, Ethiopia Sweet Lily, Yemen Mocha Sanani, Tanzania Peaberry, Sumatra Takengon Fair Trade, Bali Blue Moon, Java Taman Dadar Estate, Celebes Kalossi, Colombia Huila Pink Bourbon, Costa Rica La Minita, Peru Las Damas de San Ignacio Fair Trade, Jamaica Blue Mountain, 100% Kona Extra Fancy and Cafe Kreyol Haitian Blue. An Espresso Blend with a recipe it shares with visitors to the mill, plus a decaf version. It notes that a Viennese roast Sumatra or a French roast works just as well for espresso. A large decaf range, all Swiss Water Process, including Sumatra Takengon Fair Trade decaf in three roast levels, Ethiopian Mocha Decaf, Mocha Java Decaf and House Blend decaf. Where to drink it
The roastery in the old mill has a retail shop with about 50 coffees, free drip coffee with a bean purchase, cold brew and a wine room. It does not serve espresso drinks.

Why buying from Armeno Coffee Roasters matters here
Roasts in a mill on Smith Pond in Northborough that has operated since 1727, and visitors are welcome. Its Wachusett Blend was created for the local ski area, Mount Wachusett. The beans are also sold at Berberian Farm in Northborough and Crust Artisan Bakery in Worcester. The shop calls itself a one stop shop for coffee, wine and local goods, and hosts free Saturday wine tastings in fall, winter and spring.
