Barrington Coffee Roasting Company is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Massachusetts: an independent roaster based in Lee, founded in 1993. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
College friends Gregg Charbonneau and Barth Anderson founded Barrington Coffee in 1993. Barth trained as an environmental scientist and got hooked on coffee at 14; Gregg roasted for a local coffeehouse in college and later worked in art restoration. The company credits that mix of art and science for its approach. Both founders still work hands-on, unloading green coffee, cupping new crops and roasting the day's production with a small staff. They designed their own roastery in 2005 in the Berkshire woods of Lee. Three roasters of different sizes let them roast only what each day's orders need, from 12 ounces to 1,200 pounds.
Barrington aims to roast to highlight each coffee's own quality rather than roast flavor, and to pay growers generously and name them on its site. Barth Anderson is the green coffee buyer. Its Origin Certified program covers coffees certified at origin as grown without pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers. It supports the Casas de la Alegria program in Tarrazu, Costa Rica, which gives childcare and preventive healthcare to the children of coffee pickers, many from migrant families.
The company is the subject of a chapter in Rebecca Gray's book American Artisanal.
What they roast
Roast levels run light, medium and dark. House blends include Barrington Gold (espresso blend), Mocha Java and Berkshire. Single origins on the list when we checked: Lychee Hermoso, Colombia, Las Brisas Gesha, Progreso Pink, Risaralda, Colombia, Aricha, Ethiopia, Hafi Natural, Supernatural, Ceremony, Kalle Natural and Kalle Honey, India, San Diego and Gato Negro. Barrington Gold is its medium roast espresso blend from its farm direct projects in Asia and the Americas, and local regulars stop by the roastery for it. Decaf Gold, Decaf Berkshire and Decaf French, water process decaffeinated. Decaf French is a dark roast from a Marcala, Honduras organic producer. Where to drink it
Visitors are welcome at the Lee roastery, where they can watch production through the reception windows and get a free cup. It also runs coffee classes. No separate cafe is listed.
