Indigo Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Massachusetts: an independent roaster based in Northampton, founded in 1989. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Indigo gives 1989 as its founding year and describes itself as an independent, artisan roaster that roasts only to order, in small batches. It roasts on Rosie, a 22 kilo Ideal Rapid Gothot drum roaster built in Germany in 1951. The gas-fired machine heats the beans indirectly and is run by hand, so the roastmaster can adjust heat and airflow for each origin. The roastmaster, one of the company's founders, has roasted coffee since 1987.
Indigo holds organic, Fair Trade and kosher certifications, and supports Grounds for Health, which provides health care in coffee-growing communities, and the International Women's Coffee Alliance. Through Nexamp's community solar program, all of the electricity it buys comes from renewable sources. In 2001 Dave Brinnel and Rachel Maddow of the Dave in the Morning show on Holyoke station WRNX created an Indigo Coffee jingle.
As a USDA certified organic roaster, it is audited and inspected every year by Baystate Organic Certifiers. As a Fair Trade roaster, it says it pays well above the Fair Trade minimum price when chasing standout coffees.
What they roast
Roast levels run medium and dark. House blends include House Blend, Breakfast Blend, Bakery Blend (organic Fair Trade), New Orleans Blend, Pacific Blend, Santa Cruz Blend, Obama Blend, Iced Coffee and Cold Brew Blend and Holiday Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Ethiopian Sidamo, Kenya AA (French roast), Colombian Huila, Brazilian Sul de Minas, Sumatra Mandheling (Viennese roast) and Sulawesi Toraja (Viennese roast). Indigo Espresso Blend, Indigo Espresso Blend No. 2 and a Cuban-Style Espresso, with a decaf Cuban-Style Espresso as well. One of the widest Swiss Water Process decaf lists around, including the organic Fair Trade Cascadia Blend decaf in several roast levels, single origin decafs and many decaf flavored coffees. Offerings change with the seasons, so this is what their own pages listed on 2026-09-27.
Where to drink it
No cafe or retail counter. Bulk orders of 5 pounds or more can be picked up at the roastery if called in ahead; smaller amounts sell online and through local stores and cafes.
