Esselon Cafe and Coffee Roasting is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Massachusetts: an independent roaster based in Hadley, founded in 2006. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Esselon was founded in June 2006 as an independently owned cafe and has grown into a retail and wholesale supplier of fresh-roasted coffee, teas and coffee equipment. Since 2006 it has roasted Organic and Fair Trade coffees, sourced through Fair Trade Organic cooperatives and conventional coffee co-ops that pool resources for their members. All beans are roasted on a 1969 Gothot drum roaster, a 23 kilogram natural gas machine that has been in steady use for more than 50 years. Its heat is applied near the top of the drum, which roasts the beans evenly.
Coffee is hand roasted twice a week on site, with roast levels from light through medium to its darkest, the French Roast. The cafe says it runs on 100 percent solar power, audits its equipment regularly and uses low-flow faucets, spray heads and dishwashers. It is known in the Pioneer Valley for its thoughtfully sourced food menus and lattes, and it serves both cafe guests and wholesale customers.
What they roast
Roast levels run light, medium and dark. House blends include Espresso Fair Trade Organic, French Roast and French Roast Fair Trade Organic. Single origins on the list when we checked: Ethiopia Fair Trade Organic, Kenya AA, Sumatra Fair Trade Organic, Guatemala Fair Trade Organic, Mexico Fair Trade Organic, Costa Rica, Colombia and Brazil. Espresso Fair Trade Organic, a seasonal blend of African, Indonesian and South American coffees, plus a dark roast Decaf Espresso. Decaf Colombia, Decaf Sumatra, Decaf Mexico Fair Trade Organic from Oaxaca, Decaf French Roast and Decaf Espresso. It uses both Mountain Water Process and methylene chloride decaffeinated beans. The cafe on Route 9 in Hadley is open to the public with a full food menu and seasonal garden seating. Coffee is roasted on site.
