Alta Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Massachusetts: an independent roaster based in Arlington, founded in 2024. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Jason and Meghan were introduced to coffee farming when a trek through Peru led to an unplanned stay on a family coffee plantation. Back home, Jason built a roastery and retail space in Arlington, his hometown. It opened in September 2024. The lineup pairs rotating single origins with a permanent espresso blend and seasonal blends, bought through a few specialty importers.
Owner Jason Montano is a military veteran, according to a 2024 WhatNow Boston report on the shop's plans, and time spent on South American coffee farms led him to open the roastery. The same report said plastic waste he saw while traveling pushed him toward compostable coffee bags and other low waste packaging.
What they roast
House blends include Bunker Hill House Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Nevado Gona, Colombia (organic), Pico Celaque, Honduras (organic, Fair Trade) and Sozi Kibira, Burundi. Espresso: Whipple Hill Espresso Blend. Decaf: El Madron, Mexico. Offerings change with the seasons, so this is what their own pages listed on 2026-09-28.

The Arlington shop sells beans and pours free tastes of a daily brew, but does not sell drinks yet.

Why buying from Alta Coffee Roasters matters here
Both standing blends carry local hill names: Bunker Hill for the house coffee and Whipple Hill for the espresso. Under its Step-By-Step pledge, the shop takes back empty coffee bags for 15 cents off the next purchase and gives $1 off when a customer brings a container to fill with 12 ounces of beans. For each 12 ounce bag of Whipple Hill espresso sold, the roaster donates $1 to The Ocean Cleanup, a nonprofit that pulls plastic out of rivers and oceans.
Every bag bought from a Arlington roaster pays roasting and cafe wages in Massachusetts, and the coffee reaches you days after roasting instead of months. That is the reason the club exists. Why local roasters matter.
