What Bay State Coffee Club is
Bay State Coffee Club is a Massachusetts coffee subscription. Every box brings a 12 oz bag from a different independent Massachusetts roaster, roasted to order and shipped in the roaster's own bag. First bag free, you pay $7.99 shipping. Then $16.99 a bag, every 2 or 4 weeks, and you can skip, pause or cancel online. Gifts of 3, 6 or 12 boxes cost $66.99, $134.99 or $269.99 with shipping included.
The idea is simple. There are good roasters all over this state, from the Berkshires to the Cape. The club puts a different one in your kitchen each box, and pays them for the coffee.
Why Massachusetts
The Roast Local directory lists 102 independent roasters in Massachusetts. They are not all in Boston. Barrington roasts in the woods of Lee, in the Berkshires. Dean's Beans roasts in Orange, in the rural north of the state. Armeno roasts in a mill on Smith Pond in Northborough that has been working since 1727. Speedwell is in Plymouth, Snowy Owl in Sandwich, Three Fins in West Dennis.
The state also has a long coffee memory. George Howell ran The Coffee Connection here from 1974 to 1994, and has roasted in Acton since 2004. Equal Exchange started importing fairly traded coffee in 1986 and is based in West Bridgewater. Indigo in Northampton gives 1989 as its start.
