Northampton and Florence

Indigo Coffee Roasters roasts only to order on Riverside Drive, on a hand-run 22 kilo Gothot it calls Rosie. It has no cafe and asks shoppers to buy through its site or the local stores that carry it.

YUP Coffee Roasters is a family roastery above the Mill River in Florence, named for the New England way of saying yes. Every coffee is organic, and the roasters drop off bags themselves at shops from River Valley Co-op to hilltown farm stands.

Hadley

Esselon Cafe and Coffee Roasting roasts twice a week in the same Route 9 building as its cafe, by the Hadley Common. The cafe says it runs on 100 percent solar power.

Rao's Coffee Roasting Company keeps a store on Russell Street, open weekdays 9 to 4. Most of its coffees stop at a light or medium roast, with Sumatra, French Roast and a Sicilian Roast as the dark exceptions.

Williamsburg

Elbow Room Cafe and Roasters roasts at an old mill and sells its coffee in one-pound bags. Bags can be collected from a porch cabinet after hours.

Northampton's coffee story

Indigo dates itself to 1989, and its roastmaster, one of the founders, has roasted since 1987. In 2001 Dave Brinnel and Rachel Maddow, then on the Dave in the Morning show on Holyoke's WRNX, made Indigo a jingle.

Rao's began micro-roasting in 1990 inside its first cafe in Amherst.

Elbow Room opened in 2004 in a former ATM kiosk in Northampton that measured 80 square feet, hence the name. About six years later the owner sold the kiosk and set up a small roastery on the loading dock of a Williamsburg mill, with an espresso counter facing the roaster.

Esselon opened in June 2006 and roasts on a 23 kilo Gothot from 1969 that has been in steady use for more than 50 years.

How we chose these roasters

Every roaster here roasts in Massachusetts and was operating when we read its own site, on the date its card shows (the list itself was last checked 2026-09-27). Facts come from each roaster's own pages, written in our words; we take nothing from reviews and show no ratings. No roaster pays to be listed, and a listing does not mean the roaster is part of the club. Run a roaster here and something is off? Email coffee@baystatecoffeeclub.com and we correct or remove the page.
