Rao's Coffee Roasting Company is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Massachusetts: an independent roaster based in Hadley, founded in 1990. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Rao's started micro-roasting in 1990 inside its original cafe in Amherst. It concentrates on single origin coffees grown at high altitude in shade-grown regions, roasted to order in small batches. The company also runs training classes for the cafes, hotels, colleges and restaurants that carry its coffee.
Beans are roasted by hand in small batches every day. Most coffees end up at a light or medium level; Sumatra, French Roast and Sicilian Roast are the darker exceptions. The company buys Rainforest Alliance certified beans when it can. Wholesale orders placed by noon are usually roasted and shipped that day, and accounts can also buy loose leaf teas, filters and equipment cleaning products.

House blends include Signature House Blend and Sicilian Roast The Godfather. Single origins on the list when we checked: Ethiopian Harrar, Ethiopian Sidamo, Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, Guatemalan Huehuetenango, Papua New Guinea AA and Peru La Florida.
