Roasters in the Berkshires, by town

These are local favorites we list. A listing does not mean the roaster is part of the club.

Lee

Barrington Coffee Roasting Company roasts at 165 Quarry Hill Road. It runs three roasters of different sizes so it only roasts what each day's orders call for, anywhere from 12 ounces to 1,200 pounds. Drop-in visitors can watch through the reception windows and get a free cup, and regulars come by for Barrington Gold, its medium roast espresso blend.

West Stockbridge

Six Depot Roastery and Cafe roasts, pours and hangs art in an old train station on Depot Street. Each coffee is test roasted and cupped several times before it gets a profile on the 25 kilo Probat. Its blends include Berkshire Sky and Heart of Darkness.

North Adams

Tunnel City Coffee roasts at the Norad Mill and pours at a cafe inside MASS MoCA and another on Spring Street in Williamstown. Its Number 50 espresso is named for an early train through the Hoosac Tunnel.

The Berkshires' coffee story

Paul Lovegreen started the business in downtown Williamstown in 1992 as Cold Spring Coffee Roasters, and it became Tunnel City in 2004. The name comes from North Adams itself, long called Tunnel City after the Hoosac Tunnel, which opened in 1874 after more than twenty years of digging. In 2024 the Stockton and Patel families of Williamstown bought the company and moved the roasting to North Adams.

A year after Cold Spring opened, in 1993, college friends Gregg Charbonneau and Barth Anderson founded Barrington. In 2005 they designed their own roastery in Lee, and both still unload green coffee, cup new crops and roast the day's orders.

Flavio Lichtenthal and Lisa Landry opened No. Six Depot in 2013, leaving earlier work that ran from songwriting and social work to cooking, writing and design. They spend two to three months a year in growing countries and say they are writing a book about Ethiopia's wild coffee.

How we chose these roasters

Every roaster here roasts in Massachusetts and was operating when we read its own site, on the date its card shows (the list itself was last checked 2026-09-27). Facts come from each roaster's own pages, written in our words; we take nothing from reviews and show no ratings. No roaster pays to be listed, and a listing does not mean the roaster is part of the club. Run a roaster here and something is off? Email coffee@baystatecoffeeclub.com and we correct or remove the page.
