Tunnel City Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Massachusetts: an independent roaster based in North Adams, founded in 1992. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Paul Lovegreen founded the business in downtown Williamstown in 1992 as Cold Spring Coffee Roasters, and it took the Tunnel City name in 2004. In 2024 the Stockton and Patel families of Williamstown bought the company and moved roasting into the restored Norad Mill in North Adams. Lovegreen grew up in Woodford, Vermont, and moved to the northern Berkshires because he missed that kind of mountain country.
It has teamed up with Buena Vida, a Costa Rican producer of regenerative certified coffee, and added new lots from Costa Rica and Nicaragua. The cafes offer reusable cups made of clay, water and salt, with a discount each time a customer brings one back.
What they roast
House blends include Berkshire Blend, Thunderbolt Blend and West End Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Chumeca and Las Lajas. Espresso: Number 50 Espresso Blend. Decaf House, Dark Roast and Espresso blends. Offerings change with the seasons, so this is what their own pages listed on 2026-09-28.

Why buying from Tunnel City Coffee matters here
The name refers to North Adams, known as Tunnel City for the Hoosac Tunnel, and the Number 50 espresso honors an early train through it. The Hoosac Tunnel runs nearly five miles and took more than twenty years to build before it opened in 1874. Paintings by local artists hang in the cafes, including work from The Art Seen, a student gallery at Williams College.
