Their story
Gracenote was built on the idea that specialty coffee should be open and enjoyable for everyone, from coffee professionals to people new to specialty coffee. The team cites more than a decade of roasting experience and roasts to a fuller profile than is common in specialty coffee while aiming to keep the delicate flavors of each lot. On many Saturdays a speakeasy style listening room opens behind a hidden door in the cafe, modeled on Japanese jazz kissas, with curated vinyl and a short wine and beer list. Founder Patrick Barter sometimes sits in on drums.
Its decaf program starts from the idea that decaf should be judged by how it tastes, not by what it lacks. Online orders are roasted to order and ship on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The team suggests resting beans 6 to 12 days after roasting, depending on origin and whether it is a drip or espresso roast.
What they roast
Roast levels run light and medium. House blends include Alpha (espresso blend of natural Brazil Mogiana and Ethiopia Misty Valley). Single origins on the list when we checked: Ethiopia Misty Valley, Guji (natural, organic certified), Kenya AB Kamwangi, Burundi Busasa, Colombia Narino, Nidia Adriana Morales, Colombia Huila Pink Bourbon community lot and Guatemala Finca Los Pinos. Alpha is its take on a classic espresso blend. Several single origins, such as Misty Valley and Finca Los Pinos, come in separate drip and espresso roasts.
