Six Depot Roastery and Cafe is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Massachusetts: an independent roaster based in West Stockbridge, founded in 2013. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
A husband and wife run the roastery and cafe and travel to origin countries to find coffees. Each coffee is test roasted and cupped several times to set a profile for their 25-kilo Probat roaster. Flavio Lichtenthal and Lisa Landry founded No. Six Depot in 2013, leaving earlier work as a songwriter, social worker, chef, writer and designer.
The couple spend two to three months a year in growing countries and say they are at work on a book about Ethiopia's wild coffee. New samples are first profiled on an Ikawa sample roaster, and Flavio and Antonio roast the chosen lots Monday to Friday.
What they roast
House blends include Berkshire Sky Blend, Blue Velvet Blend and Heart of Darkness. Single origins on the list when we checked: Bali Blue Moon, Campesinas Colombia Narino, Costa Rica Tarrazu, Ethiopia Amaro Gayo and Ethiopia Yirgacheffe. Espresso: Street Legal Espresso. The business occupies what it calls the oldest train station in the Berkshires, and one blend is named for the Berkshire sky. The company began in an 1834 train station, with the couple's two young sons pitching in as packager and barista. Guests can sit on a deck facing Lenox Mountain, with a bookstore across the street and a sculpture park next door.
