Greater Boston's roasters are spread thin across a lot of towns: one in Newton, one in Somerville, two in Brookline, two in Medford, one each in Waltham, Malden, Everett and Needham. Newton gave George Howell his first cafe under his own name and the Boston area its first barista jam. Newton
Kahve Koffee is listed in Newton. George Howell Coffee roasts in Acton but runs a cafe at 311 Walnut Street in Newtonville, which serves pastry from Seven Stars Bakery.
Dedham
Fazenda Coffee Roasters roasts at a wholesale facility on Commerce Way on a Loring roaster, which it chose to cut its carbon footprint. Its Morning Bru Blend was made for listeners of a Boston Bruins podcast, and Steel and Rye in Milton is among the places that sell its bags.
Somerville, Medford and Malden

Greater Boston's coffee story
Newton comes up again and again. Kahve Koffee was introduced in 1983 by Espresso Express and calls itself one of the Boston area's first gourmet coffee companies. George Howell Coffee's first location was in Newtonville; the cafe there opened in February 2012. In 2009, Barismo organized the first barista jam in the Boston area, a throwdown at a cafe in Newton.
A year later, in 2010, Barismo brought the specialty coffee Northeast Regional barista competition to Somerville.
Quincy holds a different kind of coffee history. Bill Rosenberg opened the Open Kettle doughnut and coffee shop there in 1948 and renamed it Dunkin' Donuts in 1950. That is a chain story, not an independent roaster's, and it belongs on this page because it happened a few miles from Boston.
