Recreo Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Massachusetts: an independent roaster based in West Roxbury, founded in 2015. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Every bean comes from the family's own farm in Jinotega, Nicaragua, and is shipped to Boston for roasting in house. The first cafe opened on Centre Street in February 2015, and a third of profits go back to the farm and schooling for its workers and their families. El Recreo Estate covers 364 acres in Jinotega. The Ferrey-Machado family has owned it since 1972, and the land has grown coffee since 1905.
The farm is run by the parents of owner Miriam Morales, Leana and Carlos, and employs over 40 permanent families plus more than 200 seasonal workers. According to the company, all of its farm employees receive free housing, three daily meals, medical care and schooling for themselves and their children. Customers can book origin trips to stay at the farm, with a private room and meals, and watch picking and processing firsthand.

House blends include Estate Premium. Single origins on the list when we checked: Java Microlot, Mariana Microlot, La Finca Microlot, Don Carlos Microlot, Marsellesa Microlot and Catuai Microlot.
