Coffee on the South Shore
Plymouth coffee roasters share this stretch of the state with some of its longest-running names. Speedwell has roasted in Plymouth since 2008, Boston's Best Coffee Roasters has roasted since 1979, and Equal Exchange, founded in 1986, keeps its headquarters in West Bridgewater. Roast Local lists roasters in more than a dozen towns from Hingham to New Bedford. Bay State Coffee Club sends one Massachusetts roaster's coffee per box.

Plymouth
Speedwell Coffee Company roasts on South Meadow Road. Its signature espresso, Nine Bars, blends coffee from El Vergel in Colombia and Daterra Estate in Brazil, roasted gently and longer to soften the acidity. Leyden Street Coffee Co. and Avspresso are also in Plymouth.
West Bridgewater
Equal Exchange has its headquarters on United Drive. It is a worker cooperative, and its bylaws carry a Never Sell Out clause: if the co-op were ever sold, the net proceeds would go to another alternative trade organization. Boston's Best Coffee Roasters and Lady Sunshine Coffee are listed in the same town.
Bridgewater
Mike Shea's Coffee Roasting runs a coffee bar at its roastery on First Street. Mike Shea started on a manual 7 kilo roaster, added a 12 kilo machine and bought a 70 kilo roaster in 2020. All three are American-made Diedrichs. Restoration Coffee is also in Bridgewater.
Taunton and Foxborough
Identity Coffee Co. and Neighbors Coffee & Co. in Taunton, and Cicero's Roast in Foxborough.
Hingham, Cohasset, Hanover and Marshfield
Redeye Roasters in Hingham, Seabird Coffee in Cohasset, ACK Roasters in Hanover and SlackTide Coffee in Marshfield.
New Bedford and West Wareham
Ground Floor in New Bedford and Jim's Organic Coffee in West Wareham. Brockton, Fall River, Weymouth and Attleboro have no roaster on the Roast Local list.
The South Shore's coffee story
Equal Exchange, headquartered in West Bridgewater, was founded in 1986 and is described as the oldest and largest Fair Trade coffee company in the United States. Its first coffee came from Nicaragua, imported despite the US embargo of the time.
Boston's Best Coffee Roasters, also in West Bridgewater, has been roasting since 1979.
In Plymouth, Speedwell has roasted since 2008. Its founder, Derek Anderson, started roasting in 2001, and he still lives in Plymouth. Leyden Street Coffee Co. followed in 2019.
On the South Coast, Ground Floor Coffee in New Bedford was founded in 2019 and opened its doors in June 2023.
