Speedwell Coffee Company is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Massachusetts: an independent roaster based in Plymouth, founded in 2008. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Derek Anderson began roasting in 2001 at a wholesale roastery in New Hampshire, at a time when specialty roasting jobs were rare. That job shaped the model Speedwell follows today. He then opened a small roastery and cafe in Plymouth with his brother and later added a second location. In 2008, with a growing family, he refocused on roasting and wholesale and founded Speedwell. He still runs daily operations, concentrating on sourcing and business development, and lives in Plymouth.
The company says its mission is to source and roast great coffee and to build lasting, mutually beneficial relationships with staff, vendors and customers, putting long-term goals ahead of quick wins. Speedwell roasts to order in small batches and supports cafes and restaurants with barista training, menu and layout help, espresso equipment as an authorized distributor, and an in-house service team. Its decaf Colombia comes from the same Tolima farm and producers, Elias and Shady Bayter, as some of its caffeinated lots.
What they roast
Roast levels run light, medium and dark. House blends include Nor'Easter, Heritage, Everyday, Sunrise, Blossom, Half Speed (half caf) and Cold Brew. Single origins on the list when we checked: Kenya Gititu, Ethiopia Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia Guji natural, Colombia La Magdalena, Guatemala La Providencia and El Salvador Monte Verde. Nine Bars, its signature espresso, blends coffee from El Vergel in Colombia and Daterra Estate in Brazil, roasted gently and longer to soften acidity. Decaf Colombia and a Decaf Nor'Easter from the Bayter family farm in Fresno, Tolima, plus the Half Speed half caf blend. Decaf method not stated.
