Coffee in Bridgewater

Bridgewater
Mike Shea's Coffee Roasting roasts every day and bags the coffee straight away in one-way valve bags. The roastery has a coffee bar open to the public, with espresso drinks, pastries and house nitro cold brew you can take home in a 64 oz growler. The company backs the town library and the Bridgewater police and fire departments.
Restoration Coffee runs a cafe at 23 Central Square, one of four South Shore shops that take orders ahead for pickup. The roasting happens out of sight in its Whitman cafe, where customers can often smell the beans. Lindsey, who started there as a barista, is now head roaster.
West Bridgewater
Equal Exchange is a worker cooperative with its headquarters on United Drive. It lists no cafe or public shop there. Its coffee sells through grocery stores, food co-ops, cafes and congregations, and it buys from more than 40 small farmer groups, each of them a democratically run co-op.
South Easton
Boston's Best Coffee Roasters roasts and keeps its offices on Norfolk Avenue. The company says the plant is certified organic and Fair Trade and is kosher approved. Its house brand, Wicked Awesome Coffee, takes its name from the New England habit of calling things wicked.
Bridgewater's coffee story
The longest story here starts in 1979, when Michael Dovner, then 20, sold coffee from the back of his Monte Carlo. Boston's Best is still in the family, with all five Dovner children working in it.
Equal Exchange began in 1986. Rink Dickinson, Jonathan Rosenthal and Michael Rozyne imported coffee from Nicaragua in spite of the US embargo, as a show of support for farmers there. Today each worker-owner has one vote, top pay is held to five times the lowest, and the bylaws send all net proceeds to another alternative trade group if the co-op is ever sold.
The Shea family ran a busy coffeehouse first. Talk about making the coffee better led them to sell it and buy a roaster. Mike taught himself on a manual 7 kilo Diedrich, added a 12 kilo machine and in 2020 bought a 70 kilo one. The two small roasters still do the small batches.
Restoration's founder, Matt, worked as a mechanic for BMW and Tesla before coffee. The company brought roasting in-house in late 2019.
