Mike Shea's Coffee Roasting is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Massachusetts: an independent roaster based in Bridgewater. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Mike Shea's is a family business led by roaster Mike Shea, who taught himself to roast over years of manual roasting. The family first ran a busy coffeehouse, where conversations about how to make the coffee better led them to sell the coffeehouse and buy a roaster. Mike started on a manual 7 kilo roaster, added a 12 kilo machine soon after, and in 2020 bought a 70 kilo roaster for larger volumes. All three are American-made Diedrich roasters, and the two smaller ones are still used for small batches.
The company sells only 100 percent Arabica specialty grade coffee, from standard specialty up to farm direct microlots. It buys some coffee directly from growers and works with long-term importer partners. Coffee is roasted daily in batches and packed right away in airtight one-way valve bags. It says it favors coffees farmed with sustainable practices, including farming that builds soil biodiversity to withstand climate change.
What they roast
Roast levels run medium, medium-dark and dark. House blends include Special House Blend, Mike's Perfecto (dark), World Blend (medium), Extra French Roast and Iron Bars Espresso. Single origins on the list when we checked: Colombia, Brazil, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Sumatra, Papua New Guinea, Tanzania Peaberry, Uganda and Jamaica Blue Mountain Estate. Iron Bars Espresso, a full city (medium-dark) blend. Two Brazil decafs, a mild roast and a dark roast. Decaf method not stated.
