Red Barn Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Massachusetts: an independent roaster based in Upton, founded in 1997. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Red Barn started in the winter of 1997 in an actual barn in the Hopkinton backyard of Mark and Lisa Verrochi. Mark is a retired Navy Special Operations officer and Lisa is a registered nurse. They launched the business after moving back to New England from the Pacific Northwest. The company describes itself as one of the early builders of specialty coffee in Massachusetts and has since grown into a roasting facility in Upton that supplies its own cafes and a large wholesale network.
Its wholesale customers range from cafes and restaurants to bookstores, garden centers, grocers, colleges, offices and gift shops. It also offers toll roasting for independent coffee brands and describes itself as a small team focused on lasting relationships. Its American Espresso, a sweeter medium roast, was first developed for a cafe it ran at the Staples headquarters.
All of its coffee is 100 percent Arabica roasted in Upton, from blends and espresso to dark roasts, single origins, flavored coffees, Fair Trade organic lots and decaf.
What they roast
Roast levels run medium and dark. House blends include Red Barn Blend (medium house blend), Organic Red Barn Blend, Barn Burner, 1715 Blend, French Roast and The Roastmaster Series. Single origins on the list when we checked: Ethiopia Yirgacheffe, Kenya AA, Sumatra Mandheling, Brazil Cerrado, Colombia, Organic Colombia, Costa Rica Tarrazu, Guatemala Huehuetenango, Organic Guatemala and Mexico Altura. Italian Espresso, a dark three-coffee blend used in its cafes, an Organic Italian Espresso that is organic and Fair Trade certified, and a medium roast American Espresso. Decaf Red Barn Blend, Decaf Italian Espresso and decaf flavored coffees. Decaf method not stated. Offerings change with the seasons, so this is what their own pages listed on 2026-09-27.
Where to drink it
Online orders can be picked up at the Upton roastery Monday to Thursday mornings. The Westborough cafe on South Street serves coffee and baked goods.
