Coffee in Central Massachusetts
Worcester coffee roasters have close neighbors. Four of the roasters we list work within a few towns of each other: Acoustic Java in Worcester, Armeno and Aero in Northborough, and Red Barn in Upton. The coffee story of Central Massachusetts
A working mill has stood beside Smith Pond in Northborough since 1727. From 1908 the Armeno Cereal Company made wheat for bulgur, tabouli and couscous there. In 1994 Paul Kalenian, whose family ran the mill, started Armeno Coffee Roasters in the same building. The old Armeno Cereal sign still hangs inside, and former wheat bins now hold green coffee.
Red Barn began in the winter of 1997 in an actual barn in the Hopkinton backyard of Mark and Lisa Verrochi. It now roasts in Upton. Its American Espresso, a sweeter medium roast, was first developed for a cafe Red Barn ran at the Staples headquarters.
In Worcester, Acoustic Java at 3 Brussels Street runs a coffee campus with the Specialty Coffee Association. Head roaster David Fullerton, an authorized SCA trainer, teaches the classes, and when classes are not running the room becomes a microcinema for film screenings.

Worcester
Acoustic Java Roastery roasts and serves in the Whittall Mills complex and holds a free tasting, open to everyone, every Friday at 10 a.m. Good As Gold Coffee is also in Worcester.
Northborough
Armeno Coffee Roasters keeps about 50 coffees on hand at its mill shop, and its Wachusett Blend was created for the local ski area, Mount Wachusett. Aero Coffee Roasters, opened by Peter Femino in June 2020 after 27 years in coffee, roasts, bakes and serves under one roof at 318 Main Street.
Upton and Westborough
Red Barn Coffee Roasters roasts on Walker Drive in Upton, where customers pick up online orders Monday to Thursday mornings, and runs a cafe on South Street in Westborough.
Holden, West Boylston and Harvard
Brilla Coffee in Holden, Microcosm Coffee Roasters in West Boylston and Muddy Water Coffee Roasters in Harvard.

Is there a free coffee tasting in Worcester?
Yes. Acoustic Java holds a free tasting open to everyone every Friday at 10 a.m. in its tasting room at 3 Brussels Street, as of September 27, 2026.
Which Central Massachusetts roaster sells Swiss Water decaf?
Armeno's whole decaf range is Swiss Water Process, including a Sumatra Takengon Fair Trade decaf in three roast levels. Acoustic Java's Peru Decaf is Swiss Water Process too, as of September 27, 2026.
Can I visit the Armeno mill in Northborough?
Yes. Visitors are welcome at the mill shop at 75 Otis Street, which sells about 50 coffees, pours free drip coffee with a bean purchase and has a wine room. It does not serve espresso drinks.
Where did Red Barn Coffee start?
In a barn in the Hopkinton backyard of Mark and Lisa Verrochi, in the winter of 1997. It now roasts in Upton.
