Brilla Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Massachusetts: an independent roaster based in Holden. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
The owners are third generation coffee farmers from Nicaragua who now roast locally in small batches. Brilla supports direct trade buying so growers earn above fair market prices, and it packs coffee in an FDA approved facility. Roasting takes place in small batches at its own facility in Rutland, and the coffee also goes wholesale to Massachusetts cafes, restaurants, grocers and supermarkets.
Brilla says some farmers it buys from have used direct trade income to build schools, widen health care and improve living conditions in their towns. Its darker roasts come in espresso, Italian and Turkish styles, using beans from Nicaragua, Honduras and elsewhere in Latin America. It imported a direct trade Nicaraguan coffee called Cafe Diego from the 2021 to 2022 crop.

House blends include Central American Blend and Brilla Cold Brew Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Cafe Diego, Nicaragua, Colombia Supremo, Guatemala Huehuetenango Rio Ocho, Mexico El Palenque and Honduras Los Planes. Espresso: King Espresso.
