Broadsheet Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Massachusetts: an independent roaster based in Cambridge, founded in 2017. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Broadsheet was founded in Cambridge in 2017 with the aim of sharing its love of coffee with the local community. Every coffee is roasted on a Loring S-35 Kestrel, then destoned and color sorted at the company's roasting and training facility in Somerville. The Loring is a recirculating convective roaster that the company says burns a fraction of the gas of a conventional setup. The team cups every batch on every roast day, reviews roast curves daily, and competes in national roasting and cupping competitions to sharpen its skills.
Green buying has two tracks: blend components, where it favors organically grown community lots from cooperatives and tries to buy from the same communities each year, and single farmer microlots, including several direct trade farm partnerships. Broadsheet says it pays well above Fair Trade prices, in many cases several times the market price, and favors producers with low impact practices. It roasts across a wide range, from very light Nordic style to medium-dark, and labels bags by color coded flavor families so shoppers can find a style they like.
What they roast
Roast levels run light, medium and medium-dark. House blends include Headliner (seasonal blend), Bulletin Blend (darker blend of Central and South American coffees) and Brattle Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Ethiopia Bishan Wate, Ethiopia Halo Hartume, Burundi Bavyeyi, Uganda Yembek anaerobic natural, Costa Rica San Luis, Guatemala Concepcion Huista, Guatemala Pedro Perez Domingo, Mexico Los Altos, Colombia Wilder Lazo Pink Bourbon, Colombia Las Perlitas and Colombia Gerson Mora. Headliner is pitched as working for pour over, drip or espresso, and the Colombia decaf is noted as pulling well as espresso. Two decafs: Colombia E.A. Decaf, decaffeinated at origin with sugarcane ethyl acetate, and a natural process Ethiopia Hambela E.A. Decaf. The Kirkland Street cafe near Harvard Yard is open to the public. Roasting happens at a separate roasting and training facility in Somerville.

The cafe on Kirkland Street is within walking distance of Harvard Yard, bakes most of its pastry in house and gets croissants from Praline Cambridge. The company donates surplus coffee to local charities including homeless shelters. Roasting and barista training take place at its own facility in Somerville.
