Coffee on the North Shore
Salem coffee roasters anchor this part of the state: Jaho started as a single Salem cafe and still roasts every bean on Canal Street, and Atomic roasts to order in neighboring Peabody. Beyond them, Roast Local lists roasters in more than a dozen North Shore and Merrimack Valley towns, from Amesbury to Marblehead. Lowell has its own page. The North Shore's coffee story
Anil Mezini founded Jaho in 2005 as a single cafe in Salem. He took its slogan, Live Slow, from the slow living culture he saw while studying in Japan, and Japanese names run through the menu: Kissaten No. 3, Koyo, Shibuya Drift.
Atomic traces its roots to the mid-1990s, when two brothers opened a string of cafes on the North Shore. It is now a second generation family coffee company, led by brothers Spencer and Logan, with three Q Graders on staff buying the coffee.
In 2026 Atomic released POTENTIAL, a one-run cold brew made with coffee scientist Christopher Hendon and his company Overpotential. It used an in-line electrochemical step to lift fruit and sweetness, and Atomic says it was the first coffee made with that technology. It came out of a roastery in Peabody.

Salem
Jaho Coffee Roaster roasts and bakes at 130 Canal Street, which is also one of its cafes, and runs a second Salem cafe on Derby Street at Pickering Wharf. Its three decafs are all Swiss Water Process. Roast Local also lists Atomic Cafe Coffee Roasters under Salem.
Peabody
Atomic Coffee Roasters roasts on Webster Street and hosts tours, tastings and hands-on barista and latte art workshops. Its seasonal Witch City blend is a light roast. Capito Coffee is also listed in Peabody.
Amesbury, Newburyport and Salisbury

Where is Jaho's coffee roasted?
All of Jaho's coffee is roasted at its main roastery and bakery at 130 Canal Street in Salem. It began as a single Salem cafe in 2005.
Does Atomic Coffee Roasters have a cafe?
No retail cafe is listed on Atomic's site. It roasts in Peabody and runs tours, tastings and barista classes there, and online orders ship from the Peabody roastery.
Which North Shore roasters sell water-processed decaf?
Jaho's three decafs, including Velvet Hour and Unwritten, are Swiss Water Process, and Atomic's Daydream Decaf is a water-processed Brazil medium roast, as of September 27, 2026. Atomic also sells a decaf cold brew.
How many Q Graders does Atomic have?
Atomic's buying team in Peabody includes three licensed Q Graders. It buys only specialty grade coffee and roasts every batch to order.
