Valverde Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Massachusetts: an independent roaster based in Salisbury, founded in 2004. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
It goes back to the same small farms in Bolivia, Burundi, Colombia and Costa Rica each year and does its own importing. Daily roasting in Salisbury happens in tiny batches of a pound or two. A sister business operates in La Paz, Bolivia. Nelson Valverde grew up in La Paz, studied at Dartmouth and Wharton and spent decades in international finance before his family founded the parent company, Invalsa, in 2004.
Nelson also works as roastmaster and has judged Cup of Excellence competitions in eight countries, among them Bolivia, Brazil, Rwanda and Burundi. Most of its coffee is not Fair Trade certified. The company instead buys a farmer's best bags directly, paying more than the Fair Trade minimum price. Many of its Bolivian growers are Aymara farmers who settled in Caranavi, the province that yields about 90 percent of the country's coffee.

House blends include 100% Bolivian Organic Flagship House Roast and Purple Llama Dark Roast. Staff are at the Salisbury roasting facility weekdays from 10 am to 2 pm, with later visits by appointment.

A company blog post from 2023 says it had just run a coffee booth at the Topsfield Fair for the 14th year in a row. Online orders ship the day they are roasted, and buyers who choose pickup can collect them free at Crossroads Plaza in Salisbury.
