Hogan Brothers Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Massachusetts: an independent roaster based in Framingham, founded in 1996. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Brothers Jay and Jim Hogan worked out the business plan in 1994 and 1995, when small-scale roasting was still new in New England. They began roasting on a Probat L12 in a small cafe in fall 1995 and let customers help pick beans, blends and roast levels. Many of those coffees are still sold. Much of the work today is custom blending for cafes, diners, offices, grocery stores and caterers.
In January 1997 it added manufacturing space in Webster to grow its wholesale side, then moved in March 2001 to its current roasting plant in Framingham. Orders are scheduled to go out within 48 hours of roasting, and the company says it received a Manufacturing Award from the Massachusetts Legislature's Manufacturing Caucus. Beyond coffee it supplies brewing, grinding and espresso equipment, cold brew kegerators, Bigelow teas and DaVinci syrups.
What they roast
House blends include Deja Brew, Thunder Mountain, Morning Grog, Bacana Cafe, Dark N Tan and Blonde Roast. Single origins on the list when we checked: Colombian Supremo, Guatemalan Antigua, Brazil Santos, Ethiopian Yirgacheffe and Sumatra Mandheling Organic.
