Chilmark Coffee Company is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Massachusetts: an independent roaster based in Chilmark. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
The owners took up coffee as college freshmen in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in the winter of 1983, then went on to art school in New York. Jenny grew up on Martha's Vineyard and her partner has lived there for 34 years. They run the roastery as a family business. Bags carry a roast date, and the company says it buys from farmers who are paid well enough to reinvest in their land and towns.
The owners deliver orders themselves and prefer to work with small local businesses. El Gato Loco, a dark blend made to take cream and sugar, is named for the family's big black rescue cat. Squibnocket Rocket dates to the company's first days of roasting and is currently built on an organic Colombian coffee.
Its Guatemala comes from a Todos Santos collective of 276 women farmers in the Cuchumatanes highlands, and its decaf uses the Swiss Water Process.
What they roast
House blends include El Gato Loco (dark) and Squibnocket Rocket (dark). Single origins on the list when we checked: Guatemala (medium) and Colombia (medium). An espresso is on the list. The company says it has no retail storefront; coffee is sold online and through local stockists.

The owners describe the island as a place where people make things slowly and with care, and say they shape the business around that way of life. Bags are sold at North Tisbury Market and Alley's General Store in West Tisbury and at Edgartown Meat and Fish, while Scottish Bakehouse in Vineyard Haven pours its cold brew by the cup.
