Martha's Vineyard
Martha's Vineyard Coffee Company roasts in small batches on the island. Its house roast is Cottage City, also sold in 5 pound bags, and the lineup includes an Island Blend, a coffee named Lucy Vincent and an Off Season Decaf. Its buying focuses on Costa Rica, and it brings a coffee service to weddings and private events.
Edgartown
East to West Coffee is a couple who roast every bag themselves in small, hand-run batches. The online list is short: Nats Nook and Waterside blends, an espresso blend, a Colombian dark roast and a Colombian decaf. You can drink it at Nats Nook Cafe at 38 Main Street in Vineyard Haven. The business also repairs and services espresso machines, batch brewers and grinders.
Chilmark
Chilmark Coffee Company is a family business with no storefront. The owners deliver orders themselves, every bag carries a roast date, and the coffee is sold at North Tisbury Market, Alley's General Store in West Tisbury and Edgartown Meat and Fish. Scottish Bakehouse in Vineyard Haven pours its cold brew by the cup.
The island's coffee story
Chilmark Coffee Company's owners took up coffee as college freshmen in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in the winter of 1983, then went to art school in New York. Jenny grew up on Martha's Vineyard, and her partner has lived there for 34 years. Squibnocket Rocket goes back to their first days of roasting, and El Gato Loco, a dark blend made for cream and sugar, is named for the family's big black rescue cat.
Martha's Vineyard Coffee Company's founder got into coffee while studying anthropology in Montreal, through a part-time barista job. Time in Costa Rica near the end of those studies showed coffee as something shared with family and friends, and the founder brought that idea home to the island.
East to West takes its name from the couple's two coasts. He was born and raised on Martha's Vineyard, and she comes from the west coast of Canada. They say they spent years looking for the right cup before deciding to roast their own.
