Who each one suits
Bay State Coffee Club publishes this page and runs a competing club. Every fact about the other service was read on its own site on the date shown; read the comparison with that in mind.
Trade Coffee suits someone who wants to pick from a very large menu: 500+ coffees from 55 roasters across the US, matched to your taste by a quiz, and a queue you can rearrange. Bay State Coffee Club suits someone who wants every bag roasted in Massachusetts, by a different independent roaster each time, with one price for any roast and a box that can hold two roasters at once. If variety across the whole country matters most, pick Trade. If you want to drink and support this state's roasters, pick us. This Trade Coffee review is written by Bay State Coffee Club, a competitor, so we kept to facts Trade publishes itself.

Where Trade is stronger
Range is Trade's clear lead. Its home page counts 500+ coffees in rotation, and its help center describes a Signature plan of 450+ single origins and blends from nearly every coffee-producing country. We send coffee from one state. On the day we checked, its home page showed coffees roasting in Durham, North Carolina and Santa Barbara, California. If you want that kind of spread, Trade can do it and we cannot.
Trade gives you more control over what comes next. You can see and reorder a queue of your next three coffees, and your ratings feed its matching. With us, you set the roast, style and grind, rate each bag, and the ratings steer the next one, but you do not pick the exact coffee.
Trade's shipping costs little or nothing on many plans. Pay-per-shipment orders carry a $3.99 shipping charge, and prepaid plans and 2 lb plans ship free. It sells 2 lb bags too, which we do not.
Its trial is generous: three bags, one at a time, with the first bag free and free shipping. Trade also has a First Bag Guarantee that finds you a better match if your first coffee misses.
Trade even carries some coffee from this state: its home page features a second-generation family roaster from Peabody, Massachusetts.
Where Bay State Coffee Club is different
- Every bag is from Massachusetts. The club exists to send you coffee from roasters in this state, from the Berkshires to the Cape. Buying from them keeps the money and the jobs here, and the coffee makes a shorter trip to your door. Why Massachusetts roasters matter.
- A bigger bag at the same entry price. Our bag is 12 oz at $16.99 for any roast, light to dark, espresso or decaf. Trade's Essential bag is also $16.99, for 10.93 oz.
- Two roasters in one box. Choose two bags and the second comes from a different roaster, with its own roast and style if you like: a dark blend for the morning and a decaf for the evening. Trade's two-bag orders send two bags of the same coffee.
- First bag free. You pay $7.99 shipping on the first box, then $16.99 a bag.
- You meet the roaster. The roaster ships in its own bag with our packing slip, which names the roaster, its shop, its story and what to taste for.
The club's four promises: "Roasted and shipped within 3 days." "Free replacement if a bag disappoints." "A reminder email 3 days before each box." "Your ratings steer the next bag."
